Wired for Wonder: The Brain God Designed | The Mid-Week Memo | April 30, 2025

Scientists unveiled something stunning—a colorized 3D reconstruction of the largest mammalian brain map ever created. Using just a cubic millimeter of neural tissue (roughly the size of a grain of sand) from a mouse’s brain, researchers identified over 200,000 neurons, 523 million neural connections, and produced 22 years’ worth of HD video data from that tiny fragment alone.

Let that sink in.

To collect the data, the researchers showed short video clips (yes, even scenes from The Matrix) to the mouse and mapped its visual cortex using high-resolution imaging. What they produced resembled a galaxy—a sprawling map of neural activity that reveals how intricately our brains are wired to see, process, and remember. It’s being hailed as a major breakthrough in understanding both the brain and the diseases that disrupt it.

And yet—this vast galaxy of connection and intelligence was designed by One greater still.

The psalmist wasn’t exaggerating when he wrote, “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:14)

When we look at the complexity of even a rodent’s brain and compare it to the human mind, we can only stand in awe of the God who not only engineered this intricate design but breathed life into it. No lab, no imaging technology, no amount of research will ever replace the divine fingerprint written into every synapse and spark of our being.

So today, in the middle of your week, pause. Consider the glory of your Creator—not just in galaxies above, but in the galaxies within.

You are known. You are wired for purpose. You are held together by divine design.

And that’s the mid-week memo.
Steve
